Personally, I can see you are working small even if $5 grand is a lot of money it sure can get chewed up by a wedding.

You might want to consider something a little different. Rent a bar for an afternoon. On the east side, I think on Charlevoix, there is a place called the Texas Bar ... they could set you up.

Another bar that has a very nice garden is the Old Miami on Cass at Alexandrine.

Bars are usually slow in the afternoon and would be very interested in a $3,000 afternoon.

The Wedding-Industrial Complex is designed to vaccum money from your pocket.

Another idea would be to use the $4 grand for a down payment on a home and spend the remaining grand on a wonderful BBQ in the backyard.

good luck|||If you're a member of a church or temple, it may be less expensive to have the actual ceremony there instead of renting another venue. The cost is often minimal in comparison. Then, your biggest expense will be the reception. Some churches have social halls which are also very inexpensive to use. If you or a family member is a member of the UAW, you may be able to use one of their union halls at no cost or for a small fee. One of the other answers has good information about different locations, but your total cost will really depend on the number of your guests so you really need to make a decision about that.

Regardless of where you have your wedding and reception, the biggest expense will likely be the catering cost. You can reduce this expense by having a small wedding or by purchasing the food and having friends and family do the cooking. Or, you can reduce the cost by selecting the buffet option instead of a sit down dinner and by not serving alcoholic drinks. If you rent a venue, it's usually cheaper for a mid-day reception or for one held on a Friday or Sunday. Saturday evening will usually be the most expensive.

My sister was able to have her wedding and reception for less than $5,000 by having the wedding at our church and the reception at the Westin Southfield, but she had around 70 guests and didn't include alcohol.|||congrats Sonia on your upcoming nuptials. The Casino at Belle Isle is nice, but not close to being free. Rental of the place, depending on which part, will run you $700 to $1,000, and then you will be required to rent their chairs, so add another couple of hundred. If you want tables or table cloths, you need to + + + $.

How about this, edit your question with a couple of details: how much do you want to spend?, how many people will attend? Do you have a minister?

In short, add more details and I know people will give you their best thinking. But remember your shoe-string might be longer or shorter than others. You may think $10,000 is super skinny or that $500 is your max ...

As you can see there is a wiiide difference...

Keep in mind, the average wedding in the US last year cost in excess of $20, 000!

EDIT: Thanks for the upday Sonia, but I still don't know how many people will attend your wedding. But a rule of thumb, figure $7 a head on a BBQ with family/friends doing the cooking. $18-20 if you have it catered by a restaurant.

I see someone else offered their advice, from looking at some of his links, I think they might be worth a look see.

I tried organize a wedding for a friend last year, the folks at Belle Isle (their office is called The White House) were not very helpful. The nickle and dimeing over chairs and hours turned off my friend. He and his bride ended up going to City Hall and then to Lafayette Coney Island for the reception. It was kind of fun.
