5w30 oil used in Audi A4 destroyed engine?

The local "Pit Stop" changed the oil in my Audi. Later the manager said it is only the 2nd audi oil change. The attendent was rude when I asked if he knew the name of the oil required. 20 minutes later, my oil light came on, then went off after I checked under hood.

Light continued to come on/off. 6 weeks later, it got more frequent. I went to the Pit Stop and they changed the oil again. The light continued on, but they had assured me it was only a problem with the oil light...

In September, about 2 months later, the engine made a horrible sound.

A mechanic said that he is sure they put the wrong oil in, "5W30 all CLM", because of the price. The mechanic said it should cost $80 to $125 to change Audi's special engine oil.

Pit Stop charged me $35.34 both times.

What do you think? Is it the wrong oil?|||2 issues here...

1) The shop does not know jack and is the wrong oil.

2) Sorry guy, you failed to read the Owner's Manual and says it there that is VW and Audi Specs 502 and 505. The oil is 5W40 or 0W40 and Synthetic.

Sorry for been somewhat rude but that is the truth. Anyway, the Oil that I used was Castrol Syntech 5W40. Is one of the ones that is recommended. It says on the can that is approved by Audi and VW. Also on the link it has a list of oils that you can use. You can use Mobil 0W40 also. Oil changes are like 10,000 miles apart, that is why they use these types of oils. They last way longer than any petroleum base. Each can are like $6 a piece. The filter is not that much, just the oil and has a cavern for sump so you might need 6 Qt or more. Check your manual is there.

There is not an Audi "special" oil. Is as expensive as using Synthetic oil on any car. You can buy the Oil at Auto Zone, Checkers, Advance Auto Parts, even Wal Mart. Just that you have to read the labels and find the brand that meets the specs, that is all.

If you do it yourself, it will be easy over $40 oil change. Wal Mart will change it, but you have to buy the Oil. It might come out about $50 the change. Here where I live, Wal Mart will take the used oil for free. In Germany, you are not allowed to change the oil, except the dealer. Jiffy Lube is none existent. So each oil change are like $125.00 my friend over there, she changes her oil 2 times a year, some people 1 a year. The manual says, 10,000 miles or a Year, whichever comes 1st. At least that is on my Wife's Beetle (it has an In Line 5Cly 2.5L Audi engine). Audi was the 1st car with a Gasoline 5 Cly Engine and was the 2.5 on the 5000S in the USA. Back in 1985 it was changes at 7,500 miles on regular oil.

Change that oil ASAP and get the real deal.

Sorry guy, read your Owner's Manual, it would saved you tons of money in a mistake. Also, be careful with the coolant. You can mix some colors and some do not.|||You have and Audi and most shops do not understand how work on that car. I could list 5 examples for me and another 10 for friends who own Audis. I bet your air dam cowling is not fastened correctly or missing bolts. And EVERY SINGLE TIME the mechanic gets indignant that you are questioning their 20 years of experience.

I only go to a few shops that I know specialize in German cars. If you don't see other Audis, BMWs or Mercedes in the lot, keep looking.

Also when any light comes on, treat it seriously. It is not a bulb malfunction. Right there, I know those guys are clueless. And there is no way you can be 100% sure an oil change place can figure out what is happening.

You don't say if you have turbos or not, or the mileage on the car. If you put regular oil in a turbo engine, I think that is a big problem.

At $35 there is no way they put in full synthetic oil. And the after market filters are about 1/2 the size of the OEM filter.

A real oil filter costs $13 on blauparts web site. My shop charges $19 for the filter, $40 for the 6 quarts of oil and $40 labor.

You probably need to bite the bullet and get the car to a dealer for diagnositic and oil change.

a%26gt;|||have the engine checked for engine sludge. you are requires SYNTHETIC oil ONLY and it should be 0w40 or 5w40 they run at high RPM's and high temperature's so they need an oil that can withstand both. they also need to be Audicertified 505.00 or better or be an ACEA A2 or A3 spec oil. most 5w30 oils both conventional and synthetic by most manufactureers do not meat those requirements. Audis engines require a high-temperature/high-shear viscosity of 3.5 cP or greater. the majority of 5w30 oils are below that (closer to 2.9-3.2 cP) even when runnign the correct wieght (5w40) you need to look for the certifications.

an oil change at home in your driveway should cost you more than what you paid. to have your oil changed should have costed about $100. I do my own in my driveway and the suplies cost me $45 or so minimum up to about $65 for the higher end brands.|||It is not the wrong oil.

You can use any oil you want.

Some types are reccomended for Audi. Using the wrong type does not hurt the car. It just does not help it as much as it should.

For the oil light-Maybe they did not reset the light.

Something else must have damaged the engine.|||I never heard of a special oil for a car engien. That makes no sence. I doubt it's the oil. Call the car dealer an ask them what kind of oil your suppose to add.|||You need fully synthetic 5w40 for an Audi engine, they probably just used regular which would not work well over a long period of time. If you still have the print out for the service done at the the shop it should tell you what they used. If you do have proof that they used the wrong oil they may be liable for the damage to your car. You mechanic is right for the price of the oil change, my last one was 75$.
