The number of real poachers is also hard to number because they do it off the record.
If I were to guess, I'd say there are more hunters than poachers. Percentage wise, maybe about 60%, but that is just an estimate.
You also have to consider that certain animals were driven to endangerment because of persecution (eg: the African wild dog was persecuted just like the wolf in America and is now more endangered than the cheetah)
I'd try contacting a conservation organization for actual statistics. I'm just a zoo employee, but if you need help with certain animals in Africa that are being affected, I'm your girl! Feel free to email me.|||I can't give you an exact number but I'm sure it's very low if not 0 in the US. We have welfare program, after welfare program, after welfare program.
On the other hand if you are lost or stranded and poach to survive I don't think you would be prosecuted for poaching as human life outweighs animal life in all cases, in season or not.|||Interesting question. I am not aware of a national statistic (in the USA). Most states keep statistics on illegal shooting of animals but don't differentiate between subsistence hunting and illegal hunting for sport. Here where I live I know of people who validate their illegal hunting by claiming poverty but I know the welfare system is set up to prevent people from starving. A functioning welfare system is set up to prevent people from subsistence hunting and foraging.
